  •  Puppy Dogs 9-12 mos  (1 entered)

1st   Svesda’s Aton   07-06-08   Breeder/Owner:  Carol McHugh   By:  Ch Zhora’s Svesda-Regius Alchemy, JC   x Enchantress v. Troybhiko
A nine months old, well grown youngster of good type,. He has a strong, well formed head showing definite masculine characteristics. Nice flat planes through the neck and shoulders into bladed bone in the legs. At this stage of his growth he could be better in shoulder and this was reflected in a somewhat prancing front movement, but he kept a very typical outline and especially topline on the move. Very good hindquarters, moving soundly on the ‘out and back’.

  •  Dogs, 12 – 18 mos  (2 entered)

1st   Katz 24 Karat Gold   12-07-07   Breeder:  Kitty G. Sawyer   By:  DC Sylvan Seabury Virago, SC   x  Ch Katz Night N Paisley  Owner:  Lisa Malsam
A tall youngster of good type who moved very freely. He has a good head with a well placed eye and good veining, the muzzle ending with a pleasing Roman finish. He was stronger in front structure than 2nd in class, showing a nice amount of pro-sternum, but he was very loose in movement on the ‘out and back’. He moved out well in profile, showing a strong typical topline.

2nd  Rushwinds Talk Of The Town  03-12-08  Breeders:  Karen & Mavis Greenhill  By:  Ch Sunburst Serpa Koart At Rushwind, JC  x  Zunis Funny Cide Of Sunburst    Owners:  Peggy Merriam, Karen & Mavis Greenhill
A younger dog with an excellent masculine head full of quality. He held a very typical outline both on the stand and moving but at this stage he lacks balance between his front – very little return in the upper arm – and his strong hindquarters. He is a youngster and I would expect a dog of this type and quality to improve in these areas as he grows and settles into himself.

  •  Bred By Exhibitor Dogs  (5 entered)

1st   Sunburst Blaze-Away   07-27-07   Breeders:  Garnett Thompson & Stuart McGraw   By:  Ch V’Indra’s O’Keefe Of Sunburst   x DC Sunburst Halston At Thistledown, SC   Owner:  Garnett Thompson
This is a young male of excellent type. His refined, masculine head shows ideal proportions, with a lovely eye, neat well placed small ears, good veining and a lovely Roman finish to the muzzle. He has a strong, flat neck flowing well into good shoulders. Excellent bladed bone and good feet and coat in great condition. A typical, strong topline, not exaggerated in any way, carried as well on the move as standing. On the move, a lovely picture, covering good ground, strong coming and going and with good reach and drive.   Winner’s Dog

2nd   Sunburst Die Fledermans Prince   09-07-07   Breeders:  Rushwind Knis & Sunburst Borzoi   By:  Ch Sunburst Victory  x Ch Sunburst Syskigu@Rushwind.  Owners:  Karen & Mavis Greenhill
A smaller dog, black and tan, less mature than 1st but also a quality dog of excellent type. In comparison, he could have a slightly more masculine (strong) cast to his head, but he does have most expressive eyes and outlook. He has correctly set and angled shoulders, a strong typical topline and good hindquarters. On the move, typical, strong, ground covering.

3rd Oronzova Fireworks Festival  10/15/07 Breeder/Owner: Suzanne Deghi  By:Ch Sunburst Huntsman at Mechta  x Ch Virshina Oronzova Sweet Sizzle, JC
This dog has a beautiful masculine head with lovely eyes, small correctly carried ears, quality veining and a lovely Roman finish. His topline is a little level at this stage, lacking the definition over the loin that I would expect: however his general proportions (length of body, leg) are excellent.

4th  Kelcorov’s Over The Top, JC  10-10-06  Breeder/Owner:  Bunny Kelly  By:  Ch Kelcorov’s Walks On Water, JC  x Ch Kelcorov’s Kiss This, JC
A big dog, deep in body and strong in build with excellent bladed bone and beautiful coat. For me, he was a little too extreme over the topline, though he moved very soundly.

  • American Bred Dogs  (2 entered  1 absent)

1st Regius Morgandell Metronome   05-11-04   Breeders:  Cyndi Dell & Doreen Carlstad  By:  Ch Kelcorov’s Bialar Crais, JC  x Ch Reguius On Geomancy  Owners:  Sally Stephens & Candace Blomquist
This is a mature dog with a strong masculine head, although his eye could be darker. He has a good flat neck, excellent flat bone and correct feet. In outline, he shows an excellent typical topline, both standing and on the move. Structurally well balanced and powerful, but a reluctant mover on the day.

  • Open Dogs  (8 entered)

1st   Kyrov-Lereau Dream Seeker   03-27-07   Breeders:  Amy Sorbie & Ruth Herrmann   By:  Ch Sunburst Huntsman At Mechta   x Ch Kyrov’s Cup Cake  Owner:  Maurine Cooley
This young dog (only two years old) exhibited a very typical outline and a most positive attitude in the ring. He has a young head, but typical, with a good well placed tight eye and a lovely Roman finish to the head. He has good flat bone and correct shoulder structure and placement, balanced by very good hindquarters – a balanced dog who moved freely with reach and drive. Shown in excellent condition.  Reserve Winner’s Dog

2nd  Jags Swanmanor Julies Jackpot  02-16-04  Breeders/Owners:  Torrea  Leborn, Angela Hagen & Julie Hagen  By:  Ch Soyaras Titan Of Blackmoor, JC  x Ch Swanmanor Harlequin Huntress O Jag
Another young dog with an excellent head – good, well placed eye, quality masculine Roman finish. He has excellent flat boning throughout, good feet, balanced angulation and is a free mover. Perhaps not quite the strength and shape in topline as 1st.

3rd Kazacov’s American Pilot   11-01-04   Breeder:  Clair Sutton  by:  Ch That’s-A Lick And A Promise  x Ch Svoras Sea To Shining Sea   Owner:  Rich Protzel
A masculine dog, rather more exaggerated in head planes than first two but with good veining, lovely eye and classy Roman finish.  Balanced in angulation, with good bone and feet, showing typical topline on the move, though a little narrow in movement coming and going.

4th Jags Swanmanor Jovial Jaguar   02-16-04   Breeders/Owners:  Torrea  Leborn, Angela Hagen & Julie Hagen  By:  Ch Soyaras Titan Of Blackmoor, JC  x Ch Swanmanor Harlequin Huntress O Jag
This was another dog with an excellent head and who showed very good type on the stack. On the move he ended to be a little too flattened over the loin and a little off on one rear hock. He has a deep body and good structure and angulation fore and aft allowing a free and reaching profile movement.

v           No 6-9 months puppy bitch entries

  • Puppy Bitches 9-12 mos  (2 entered)

1st   Svesda’s Artemis    07-06-08   Breeder/Owner:  Carol McHugh   By:  Ch Zhora’s Svesda-Regius Alchemy, JC   x Enchantress v. Troybhiko
A young bitch with pleasant head planes, good eye and ear placement. She was a little unsettled in the ring which tended to exaggerate her topline, but she was very true coming and going and in profile once she settled. Good, balanced angulation fore and aft with good flat bone and excellent coat.

2nd   Svesda’s Aurora Golightly   07-06-08   Breeder:  Carol McHugh   By:  Ch Zhora’s Svesda-Regius Alchemy, JC   x Enchantress v. Troybhiko    Owner:  Marcella Zobel
Another free moving youngster who carried a good outline both standing and on the move.  The transition from neck into shoulder is good, but she is a little loose in front movement, and could be a little tighter in upper arm.  Her head falls away a little too much in backskull but her general expression is typical.

  • Bitches, 12-18 mos  (8 entered)

1st   Golightly’s Big Day   11-11-07   Breeders/Owners:  Marcella Zobel & Phillip Zobel   By:  Kyrov’s Intensity  x DC Golightly Glacis LeReau, SC
This youngster impressed ‘all over’ – good balanced angulation front and rear, lovely feminine head, both in profile and full on, and so typical in outline and outlook. Bone just right and a nicely developed prosternum giving strength to her front. She had a real smoothness in motion with great drive from behind and so sound! A very promising youngster.     Reserve Winner’s Bitch

2nd  GL Belle Of the Ball At Lereau-Kyrov   11-11-07  Breeders:  Marcella Zobel & Phillip Zobel  By:  Kyrov’s Intensity  x DC Golightly Glacis LeReau, SC  Owner:  Ruth Herrmann
Another of the same type, perhaps not quite as good over the topline as the winner, or with quite the power of movement and construction in the shoulder. She has a quality feminine head, lovely bladed bone, excellent hindquarters and a wonderful outlook.

3rd  Oronzova  Party Girl In Paradise  10/15/07 Breeder:  Suzanne Deghi    By:  Ch Sunburst Huntsman at Mechta  x Ch Virshina Oronzova Sweet Sizzle, JC   Owners:   Toby & Todd Brandtman
A "classy" young bitch with lovely outline, strong topline, balanced angulation and good bladed bone.  Her head is a little plain in comparison with those above but she is still feminine and her movement is smooth, true and free.

4th  Rushwind’s Come Fly With Me  03-12-08  Breeders:  Rushwind Kennels  By:  Ch Sunburst Serpa Roart, JC  x  Sunburst Sweet Revenge Rose   Owners:  Karen & Mavis Greenhill
A younger bitch, very feminine with excellent head properties and a typical outline. She is a little loose in front movement at the moment and needs to deepen still in her chest, but her actual angulation, both front and rear, is good.

  •   Bred-By-Exhibitor Bitches  (11 entered  1 absent)

1st  Mechta Fortuitous Adhara  06-01-06  Breeders/Owners:  Stuart McGraw, Marilyn & William McGraw  By:  Ch Sunburst Huntsman At Mechta  x Ch Kelcrest Brolin Heat Wave, SC
This girl is a star! A bitch of exquisite quality and type, all parts flow into such a harmonious typical whole, and beautifully presented: she really took my eye. Her excellent balanced angulation proved itself in her fluent, free, ground covering movement. Her outline, and her topline in particular was excellent both on the stand and in movement. She has a beautiful head with a dark, expressive eye, clear veining and a feminine Roman finish to her muzzle. An elegant borzoi indeed.   Winner’s Bitch

2nd Sunburst Isabella Fiore Whisper Wind   07-27-07   Breeders:  Garnett Thompson & Stuart McGraw  By:  Ch V’Indra’s O’Keefe Of Sunburst  x DC Sunburst Halston At Thistledown, SC  Owner:  Garnett Thompson
This is a younger bitch, not quite having the settled balance and finish of 1st, but still a lovely flow of lines from the head through the neck into the typical topline and the strong hindquarters. At this stage she could have slightly more prosternum evident and a little more angulation in her shoulder. She has a refined, feminine head with dark eyes and well set and carried ears.

3rd  Golightly Brolin Ooma Franka, JC  05-28-05  Breeders/Owners:  Kerstin Brolin & Marcella Zobel  By:  Ch Perchotin’s Ivor, JC  x DC Brolin’s Golightly Hurricane, SC
A balanced, refined bitch of excellent proportions with a lovely feminine head showing good planes and a dark well set eye. Her strong neck flows into a lovely topline which she holds well on the move, and her deep chest completes a complementary sweeping underline.

4th  Sterling Play The Balalaika  02-29-08  Breeders/Owners:  Lisa Cole & Amanda Murphy  By:  Ch Sterling Emmett Honeycutt  x Sterling Crazy Beautiful
A taller bitch, very young, but balanced, and covering the ground well on the move. She lacks the maturity and finish of those above her but shows great promise, with such a typical outline, a strong topline carried well on the move and an elegant feminine head.

  •   American Bred Bitches  (3 entered  1 absent)

1st   Kelcorov’s Drama Queen   05-07-05   Breeder/Owner:  Bunny Kelly  By:  Ch Kelcorov’s  Bialar Crais, JC  x Kadril iz Kietezh Grada
This girl impressed with her lovely alert feminine head and her very typical outline. Well angulated both in shoulder and hindquarter she moved positively and soundly, keeping that typical shape all the time. Lovely impression of flatness through the neck and shoulders down to the boning of the forelegs.

2nd  Last Tango Of Star Canyon  10-06-07  Breeders:  Christa Cordtz, Sally Barron & Sidney Weinstein  By:  Ch Belarus The Rapture, CD, SC  x  Pickle Hill’s Princess II  Owner:  Sidney Weinstein
Plainer in head than 1st, none-the-less this girl has good balance between foreface and backskull, a dark eye and a pleasant Roman finish to her muzzle. She too is well balanced fore and aft with bladed bone and good feet, and she moves correctly and with spirit.

  •   Open Bitches:   (10 entered  1 absent)

1st  Russkiy Standart Brusnika  09-16-03  Breeder:  D Ivaskin  by:  Grand Ft. Giljay Rusich  x Lutrenia Beloe Noteh  Owner:  Galina Powell
A mature bitch, this elegant girl impressed with her poise and balance. She has sufficient rise in her topline and her movement showed excellent reach and drive, reflecting her sound construction. Lovely head planes and proportions gave her a very feminine outlook, though her eyes are a little round. She has great bladed bone, good depth trough and lovely low hocks. A beautifully presented bitch.

2nd  Borscana Iron Maiden  03-18-06  Breeders:  Lize Edland & Rickard Sellin  By:  Moryjak Wild Is The Wind  x Apurva Bist Kupstwo  Owner:  Cynthia Dell
This was a younger, well made and more compact bitch with a pleasant head showing lovely veining and a Roman finish. She had a strong neck and topline, good deep chest and flowing hindquarters. Not so happy on the stand, she impressed particularly on the move where she covered ground with power and ease.

3rd  Jags Swanmanor Lucky Loveable Liv Tee Cee    01-25-07  Breeders/Owners:  Torrea  Leborn, Angela Hagen & Julie Hagen  By:  Swanmanor Jag Juneau Odyssey  x Swanmanor Kodiak Magik Odyssey, SC
Younger still, this bitch did not quite have the balance of the previous two. Her long sloping shoulder needed a better return of upper arm to balance the sweeping hindquarters. Very typical feminine outline, good topline and corresponding depth of chest, correct flat boning and very good head.

4th Sunburst Heaven’s Traveler   04-22-05  Breeders:  Garnett Thompson & Michelle Carter   By:  Ch That’s –A Heavenly Hound  x Ch Sunburst Amazing Grace Troybhiko   Owners:  Garnett Thompson & Barbara Simpson
This was a showy, typical girl with a good head and feminine expression with nicely set eyes and neat small ears. She needs a slightly better balance between shoulder (a little upright) and her sweeping hindquarters. Good bone but rather upright in pastern, evident on the move. Kept her outline well on the move.

Ch Steppes’ Azja Tuhajbejowicz   03-05-01  Breeders/Owners:  Jonnie Bradley & Monika Stachon   By: Ch Steppes Wars Piquant  x Ch V’Indra’s Steppes’ Sihouette
At 8 years old, this lovely, dark mature boy was still moving soundly coming and going but was perhaps showing his age a little in profile movement.  He has a grand, typical outline which he carries well on the move, and a mature, masculine head with a wise expression.

  • Veteran Bitches   (3 entered 1 absent)

1st  Ch Virshina Lalique Radost, CGC, JC  7/4/99  Breeder:  Chris Bradley  By Ch Truhavens Midas Run x Ch Virshina Sweet Pea, CD,  FCh.  Owners:  Lynda & Kirk Gillaspey
This 10 year old was truly one of the stars of the day!  She is of lovely type and shape, mature and still strong in movement, well muscled and in beautiful coat. Her head is beautifully feminine in structure, with a mature, calm and wise expression. Very good shoulder construction balanced by a very good rear and carrying her topline positively as she moved with animation around the ring!  Lovely!

    2nd
Pickle Hill’s Dark Allegory, JC, RN, RA   05-24-97   Breeder:  Fern Lockrem  By:  Silkenswift Blues Brother  x Pickle Hill’s Masqualia  Owner:  Bunny Kelly
This lovely 12 year old was showing her age a little but her beautiful feminine head and balance in construction are a credit to her breeders and owners. Still sound on the ‘out and back’, but a little soft in topline as she went around the ring.

A beautiful, mature feminine bitch, free flowing in movement and the picture of the breed standing. She has an exquisite head with great definition in veining, dark well positioned, obliquely set eye, lovely small ears and finished with a classical Roman nose!

The line from her neck into her topline flowed beautifully into an ideal topline and then fell away gracefully to broad well developed hindquarters. Lovely set of shoulder and balanced with sweeping hindquarters. Coat in perfect condition and beautifully presented. Movement long and low and powerful, looking supremely elegant and graceful.

Handsome 5 year old dog of lovely type and good size. He has a strong masculine head with a deep punishing jaw, good flat neck and shoulders and lovely bladed bone in front. The shoulder is well set and shows just the right amount of pro-sternum, and (both standing and on the move) he has a wonderful typical flowing topline and underline. Thank you for the very special privilege of judging this show. I was particularly conscious of this honour given that I am not a breed specialist, but the Borzoi is a breed which has always been a favourite of mine and so I approached the assignment with a sense of real pleasure.

The general standard of exhibits was high and I was most impressed with the quality of heads and the outline of the dogs – typical toplines and deep sweeping underlines, without undue exaggeration. Presentation was, without exception, excellent.

Movement generally was good but I was conscious that a number of dogs did not demonstrate their full potential in this respect due to lack of muscle and conditioning. I love the idea of the Borzoi as an ornament, but am committed beyond that to the image of an elegant, athletic and powerful hunter, which is only achieved through working the dogs in some way.

Thank you to all the officials of the club who helped make the show; the people who kept in touch with me through arrangements; the stewards and helpers at the ring; and to you, the exhibiters, for your good sportsmanship on the day.       Dr. Francis Mc Evoy

BEST OF OPPOSITE SEX TO BEST IN VETERAN SWEEPSTAKES
CH Belarus The Rapture, CD, SC   Owner:  Christa Cordtz

My many thanks to BCNC and its members for the opportunity to judge the puppy and veterans sweeps at the Spring Specialty this year. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and hope all the sweeps participants felt they received fair time with me. Overall a nice crop of youngsters and gracefully aging veterans. I saw many styles which gives me hope that our gene pool continues with enough variance to keep good health and quality in our breed.

The most impressive class for me was the 12-18 month bitches-which can often be a class of gangly adolescents - which wasn't the case on that day. The top 3 placements in that class were all more than worthy of taking the top award, and final line-up was based on subtle points.  The 1st place and eventual Best in Sweeps from that class was a lovely elegant bitch,  with nice feel to her body, bone, substance, soft classic expression, proper topline and balanced movement. She had an eye catchy presence when she first entered the ring and did not leave me wanting. I was not surprised  to hear later she was already pointed with a major win, well deserved.

Ah, the boys. The BOS was a big boned, silly boy with nice mass, rib spring and when settled down, true coming and going. He lost the top award only in maturity. This boy should have a nice future and  hope to see him when fully mature and see how his promising qualities have come along. There were a couple of other boys considered, pretty and moving well, but preferred the mass, bone of the younger puppy.

The Veterans: I was very impressed with the condition of the grand oldies. Was wonderful to get my hands on these and found solid defined muscle tone, nice on the move, good mouths still which is hard to keep in the aged, and overall in great shape. That goes for all of them presented to me that day.
The BOS, a lovely gentleman, quite elderly and not showing those years, was in terrific shape, solid throughout and a style I preferred over the others. Another fine veteran well kept by his owner.

The Best Veteran, is one of those borzoi that is truly hard to fault, a complete package, and well beyond the average quality for a show borzoi. A lovely white/red sable, gorgeous style, balance, soundness and side movement. It would be nice that these 4 qualities she possessed would always go hand and hand, but most often thats not the case...how often do we see a lovely sidegait, only to be disappointed by a sloppy down and back. This lovely grand old lady, in better shape than many half her age, is a borzoi our future breeders should study, a total borzoi package we never want the breed to lose. Kudos to her breeder/s and owner who has obviously taken great care of her.

Thank you again for this fine day, lovely show set up, beautiful unique trophies,...congrats to the hard working club members for a successful specialty day. And thank you for the lovely judges gift I received.

Best always,
